Competent cultures of Rhizobium meliloti cells and spheroplasts were infected with DNA of phage 1A. The efficiency of transfection was calculated from the ratio of plaque-forming units to infective DNA molecule. The frequency of infection and efficiency of transfection were about one order of magnitude higher with cells than with spheroplasts.
