The content and synthesis of acetylcholine (ACh) in the brain and its amount in the stomach wall in conditions of stress stimulation and post-stress exhaustion were studied in male Wistar rats. Stress stimulation was produced by forcing the animals to swim with a load. To study the effect of exhaustion rats were submitted to the swimming stress and sacrificed after a 40 min rest period. Stress resulted in a significant decrease of ACh content in the rat brain and in a simultaneous, but insignificant, increase of its amount in the stomach tissues. Post-stress exhaustion was characterized by a significant increase of ACh content in the brain and its negligible decrease in the stomach tissues. Rats in stress conditions exhibited a distinct, although insignificant, increase of ACh synthetic ability, while in the group of animals with post-stress exhaustion the opposite effect was found.
