Characteristics and survival of adult AIDS cases in Puerto Rico, 1999

Objective: To describe the characteristics, ADCs, and survival of adults AIDS cases in Puerto Rico from 1981 through 1998. Methods: We performed a population-based study with confirmed AIDS cases aged 20 or more reported to the Puerto Rico AIDS Surveillance System. Results: Acumulative total of 22,060 adult AIDS cases have been reported, of which, 78% were males. More than half of the cases were IDUs. The median survival time after diagnosis was 17.8 months for males and 26.4 months for females. Median survival was significantly Ishorterfor IDUs (17.5 months) and for persons age 60 or more. Patients diagnosed before 1993 had a significantly lower median survival (11.7 months) as compared with those dianosed after 1992 (32.2 months). Patients diagnosed with toxoplasmosis and PCP had the shortest median survival time (5.7 months). Females had significantly longer survival in all age groups, in both time periods and in those who reported IDU and hterosexual contact. Conclusions: These findings could be used as a baseline of Puerto Rican clinicians for evaluation the influence of characteristics and therapies on AIDS survival.
