Traumatic dermatitis crustosa of the bovine udder

A description is given of traumatic dermatitis observed in udders of 3 mastitis-negative, high-yielding Friesland cows. The condition appeared as extensive lesions of the udder skin. There were no parasites or viruses associated with material scraped from the affected areas. Bacteriological culture yielded a variety of bacteria including Escherichia coli, Bacillus spp., Corynebacterium spp., and Staphylococcus aureus. Repeated local antiseptic treatment was unsuccessful. During lactation the skin condition was confined to those lateral and caudal portions of the udder most exposed to rubbing of the voluminous, deep and rather pendulous udders against the hindlegs. The lesions healed during the dry period except for some hyperkeratosis. The condition returned during the edematous perinatal phase of udder development.
