It was found in further investigations on the effects of Bacillus thuringiensis on Noctuid larvae [cf. preceding abstract] that those of Spodoptera litura (F.) showed some immunity to the pathogen. Non-susceptibility was studied from the histological and physiological points of view, and it was found that there was no inhibition of feeding nor changes in the anatomical structure of the gut or pH of the blood and gut contents. The gut contents showed antibacterial activity, which was not detected in the blood or extracts of the leaves on which the larvae fed.
