Bronchial asthma is highly prevalent in Puerto Rican children. Usually is begins before the age of 6 years and often during the first year of age. We estimate that among the school populations of Puerto Rico in 1972 (97,410 for public schools and 85,094 for private schools) about 42,255 children were affected by asthma. In appears that medical care and preventiva measures are not adequate for most of the affected children. The problem is serius and merits further research concerning its frequency, etiology, prevention and improved delivery of health care to these children.
