Coffee drinking and cancer of the lower urinary tract

The relation between coffee drinking and cancer of the lower urinary tract (LUT) was studied in 135 women with LUT cancer and 390 control women patients in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Women drinking one or more cups of coffee per day had a risk ratio of having LUT cancer of 2.1 (95% confidence limits) to 1 in women who drank less coffee. There was no dose-response relation between LUT cancer and daily coffee intake or 'cup-years' of coffee drinking. The association between coffee and the disease was the same whether the coffee was strong or weak, decaffeinated or not, regular or instant. Use of cyclamates or saccharin did not increase the risk. The absence of a dose-response relation between coffee-drinking and LUT cancer suggested the association was not causal.
