Angiostrongylus vasorum and other nematodes in British greyhounds

The faeces of 240 Greyhounds at the Greyhound Racing Association kennels at Northaw were examined by the egg flotation technique; 51% were negative for nematode ova, 30% were positive for Uncinaria stenocephala, 17% for Toxocara canis, 12.5% for Toxascaris leonina and 7% for Trichuris vulpis. Of 96 greyhounds examined by the Baerman technique, one was positive for A. vasorum, thought to be the first record of this parasite in Great Britain. A. vasorum is endemic in Ireland, from which country the dog had recently been imported. Clinical picture, radiological findings and faecal larval counts suggested a low grade infection. After levamisole had been given at 10 mg/kg s/c on three consecutive days, the dog became negative, gained weight and showed improved racing performance.
