Endemic goitre prevalence in school children of Merapi area, Java

A survey of goitre was made on 11 774 schoolchildren living around the Merapi volcano in Central Java. Incidence of goitre was 72.5%. It rose from 47.9% in boys and 46.1% in girls less than 7 years old to 61.1% in boys and 67.8% in girls 12 to 17 years old. In those 18 years old it was 50.9% for each sex. Incidence was higher in the West and South than in the East, and highest in the area where lava from the volcano flowed, 95% of 7786 schoolchildren in Srumbung. In a village on the west side of the volcano, where a house-to-house survey covered 90% of the population, incidence of goitre was 100% in women 30 to 40 years old and 40 cretins were seen.
