Cobalt-induced epilepsy in rats: a study in biochemical substances

Convulsions were induced by Co implantation in rats of 4 inbred strains, Lewis, DN, AC1 and Fisher 344 and 3 random-bred strains, Wistar, Sherman and Sprague-Dawley; Ca, alkaline phosphatase and other biochemical substances were estimated in serum 24 h later. There was an inverse relation between sensitivity to induction of epilepsy and serum alkaline phosphatase; the differences between the strains seemed to be genetic. The association between the observations and disturbances of vitamin D metabolism in epileptic patients whose serum alkaline phosphatase is high after treatment with anticonvulsant drugs is discussed.
