1. Proteus spp. were found to swarm only in the presence of an adequate concentration of electrolytes. 2. A medium based on this finding, intended for the prevention of the swarming of Proteus, and suitable for use in routine practice was evolved. 3. The medium effectively prevented the spreading of 225 strains of Proteus. 4. Commonly isolated organisms were tested on the medium for their growth, colonial appearances and other distinguishing properties. 5. Differentiation of colonial types was enhanced. 6. The medium compared favourably with other media at present in use for the prevention of swarming and support of bacterial growth. 7. The effectiveness of the medium against some spreading strains of aerobic spore-bearers was investigated.
