Spread of the 1965/66 FMD outbreak in Switzerland indicated that the successive jumps made by the disease transversely from one valley to another, with the first outbreaks on the ridges of the valleys, were the result of the formation of virus aerosols that were carried by the wind. In one focus, no farms above 1050 metres became infected, presumably because the unaffected farms were above the clouds, so that the solar UV radiation could kill any virus in the atmosphere. No further outbreaks occurred in this focus as soon as the cloud disappeared. The use of UV lamps is proposed for the disinfection of the air in houses and lorries containing infected animals.
