FMD virus of type Asia 1 was detected in Iran, near Teheran, in early April, 1973. As the situation in Iran became more serious, production of Asia 1 vaccine was commenced in late June, and an attempt was made to create a buffer zone in the eastern boundary of Turkey towards the end of July. By this time, however, the disease had covered the frontier and during August spread rapidly westward through Turkey. A meeting convened by FAO in Ankara on August 29th and 30th recommended limiting the movement of animals in Turkey, a mass vaccination campaign in Thrace, and ring vaccination in Anatolia around infected foci.
