Total cholesterol in plasma and liver of male Wistar rats on a high-fat diet was reduced after daily intraperitoneal injection for 1 week of extracts of green algae, but not after injection of extract of brown algae; total cholesterol values decreased from 2 to 3 weeks after the rats received green algae by mouth. In rats given normal diets total cholesterol in plasma and liver did not decrease when the seaweeds were given either by mouth or intraperitoneally. Anticoagulant action, examined by thromboelastography in rats given extracts of green and red algae by intraperitoneal injection, was not observed, indicating that clearing and anticoagulant substances are not identical.
