Individual values are presented for fresh weight, Mg, Ca and P in mg, total and per kg, for placentae from 5 mares, 10 ewes, 5 heifers and 5 women; Table 2 summarises the results as means and standard deviations. There was no significant difference in Mg content between species, but there were significant differences in mean Ca content between heifer, 260, mare, 382, and ewe, 371 mg/kg. The human placentae gave both the highest, 1526, and the lowest, 130, and the highest mean value, 710 mg/kg. For P the difference between mare, 781, and ewe, 851, was not significant between heifer, 503, and ewe was highly significant. The human placenta had the highest P content, 1180 mg/kg. In calculating losses of minerals at parturition as a part of requirements in pregnancy those of Mg, Ca and P in the placenta are negligible in comparison with loss in the foetus.
