It's impossible to pick up a newspaper or watch a televised news broadcast without encountering patient -centered horror stories involving HMOs and managed care. Discontent has reached critical mass because a) people have had enough time and sufficient experience with managed care to understand the impact it's had on the quality of healthcare. and (2) the media has found the situation an irresistible and sensational source of grist for its insatiable maw.
