Parasitic nematodes of birds from de Monte Pond, Buenos Aires, Argentina

Four egrets (1 Egretta alba egretta, 1 E. thula thula and 2 Bubulcus ibis ibis) were killed in De Monte Pond, Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1994 and were examined for parasites. Microtetrameres canadensis argentinensis subsp. nov. is described and figured from B. ibis ibis. It is compared in a table with M. canadensis canadensis from Nyctia scandiaca from Canada. Contracaecum philomultipapillatum sp. nov. is described and figured from B. ibis ibis (type host), E. thula thula and E. alba egretta. It resembles C. multipapillatum but differs from it in the relative length of the spicules (2-4% of body length) and the number and distribution of caudal papillae (83 to 87 pairs of caudal papillae and 3 to 4 pairs of postcloacal papillae). A key is given for the identification of species of Contracaecum, parasites of waterfowls and marine mammals of South America. Dimensions of C. multipapillatum and C. philomultipapillatum are compared in a table, and the diets and nematodes of the 3 egret species are listed.
