Game theilerioses--a serological investigation

Serum samples from each of the following species, wildebeest, Coke's hartebeest, impala, Grant's and Thomson's gazelle, and of Masai cattle from the same area, were examined for Theileria parva and T. mutans antibodies by means of the capillary tube agglutination test and indirect fluorescent antibody test. Cattle samples reacted specifically with T. parva and T. mutans antigens, and game samples with T. parva antigen only. Intraerythrocytic theileria organisms were found in blood smears of all game animals, but could not be needle-transmitted to splenectomized calves. The possibility of an interrelationship of T. parva infections between antelope and cattle is discussed.
