Various types of ophthalmological complications due to the use of systematic drug therapies are briefly described. Oral contraceptives seem to be associated with stenoses of veins or arteries and with papillary edema as a result of elevated intracranial pressure. Patients have usually been taking the medication only about 10 months and often have a history of vascular disease. The mechanisms of this connection are not understood, but the fact that pathology usually improves or even disappears when medication is discontinued is a convincing argument for its existence.
