Early diagnosis of severe mushroon poisoning in children by means of enzymatic activity determination

The activity of 7 enzymes was determined in 18 children aged 2-14 yr poisoned with mushrooms regarded as edible. Enzymatic activity was high in 4 children with severe hepatocellular damage (2 died in hepatic coma). A fall in glutamate dehydrogenase and sorbitol activity was seen when the outcome was unfavourable. Rapid recovery ensued in the remaining 14 children who had the onset of the disease similar to the other 4 but activity of all determined enzymes failed to rise or rose only slightly.
