When 50 normal and diabetic women after the menopause were given conjugated oestrogens cyclically for a year 19 developed reduced glucose tolerance, significantly in 9. Of 16 patients considered diabetic or classified as "abnormal" 9 improved or maintained their degree of abnormality on the oestrogens. In most, the reduction of glucose tolerance was stabilised after 9 months of treatment and was usually reversed when the oestrogens were withdrawn.
