A glucose load given by vein to 10 normal children from 9 to 16 years old produced a normal blood glucose tolerance curve. When the same load was given to obese children of the same ages, more than 20% above normal weight for age, although a curve of the diabetic type was not produced 6 of the 13 had blood glucose significantly higher than in the normal children 30 min after the load was given. Total lipids in blood were in the obese 755 mg/100 ml and in the normal, significantly less, 585 mg/100 ml. The obese had alpha -lipoproteins 162 and beta -lipoproteins 589 mg/100 ml; corresponding values for the normal group, again significantly different, were 211 and 374 mg/100 ml. Blood cholesterol did not differ significantly. Free fatty acids in the normal group rose from 81 while fasting to 91 mg/100 ml after glucose; corresponding values in the obese were greater, 118 and 214 mg/100 ml.
