712 cases of yellow rice borer dermatitis

Dermatitis caused by the yellow rice borer (Scirpophaga incertulas (Wlk.) (Schoenobius incertellus (Wlk.))) a lowland Pyralid was studied on a farm and in Kwangchow suburbs, China. There were two forms of the dermatitis. That caused by the egg-batches occurred mainly among peasants who collected egg-batches from rice seedlings and less frequently among those transplanting rice seedlings. There was an incidence of 80% among 550 peasants performing these tasks. The second type is contact dermatitis caused by the adult moths. This was common among ordinary people and peasants working in the rice-fields; 31.1% of 875 people in a school were affected. The dermatitis was primarily caused by the scale hairs covering the egg-batches and the scale hairs on the apex of the abdomen of the female moth.
