Chromosome studies in artificial insemination sires in Great Britain

Data are tabulated on chromosome aberrations found over an 18-mth period in 421 bulls, either on progeny test or with high or low reproductive efficiency, at the Milk Marketing Board's cattle breeding centres. The beef bulls were all established AI sire, and most of the dairy bulls were Friesians or Holstein-Friesians. 412 bulls had normal karyotypes. A heterozygous 2/4 centric fusion was found in a Friesian of normal fertility, and sex chromosome chimaerism was found in 7 Friesians and 1 Charolais. The results of this and earlier studies are discussed.
