The clinical forms of the infection, whether furunculosis or an acute form without external signs, are described. The work of R.H.W. Schubert on the bacteriological identification of the three main A. salmonicida types (achromogenes, masoucida and salmonicida) [see V.B. 40, abst. 1489] is summarized. A table of the biochemical characteristics of the three types is reproduced. Methods are described for differentiating the pathogenic A. salmonicida from a group found ubiquitously in fresh water, chiefly A. hydrophila and A. punctata.
