Examination of 11807 faecal samples from 186 herds with suspected salmonella infection confirmed the presence of the infection in 70 herds. The commonest serotype was S. typhimurium (46 herds), followed by S. dublin (10) and S. enteritidis (6). Control measures instituted in infected herds consisted in strict hygiene and regular disinfection, chemotherapeutic treatment of clinically affected and carrier animals, faecal examination to check the results of treatment, further treatment and faecal examination of animals still infected, and culling of infected animals that did not respond to treatment. By 1972 the infection had been eradicated from all but two herds. In these a single calf was shown to be infected. During the campaign only five animals had to be culled.
