Electromyographic analysis of reflex and spastic activities of canine pectineus muscles in the presence and absence of hip dysplasia

Electromyographic measurement indicated that an abductive tension of 200-400 g applied to the stifle of lightly anaesthetized dogs was the minimum required to cause stretching of the pectineus muscle, and the response was well maintained for 10 seconds at the maximum abductive tension of 45 kg. Pectineal response was abolished by deep general anaesthesia, spinal anaesthesia and severance of the nerve supply to the muscle, while severence of the tendinous insertion greatly reduced the motor unit potential activity caused by stifle abduction. It was concluded that the pectineal response was a hyperactive myotatic reflex. The results were unaltered by the presence or absence of hip dysplasia.
