To analyze SP's (silent period) following some stimulus during an isometric contraction, a computer program evaluated the prestimulus EMG (electromyographic) activity to discriminate, in a statistical way, the random EMG variations from those due to neural responses triggered by the stimulus. The strength and latencies of the various inhibitory and excitatory responses of the SP were automatically calculated. By analogy with the ECG terminology, a letter code was introduced to ease information exchange.
