The fate of the mammary tumour virus (MTV) and the host reactions to MTV and associated antigens in C57BL/Crgl (C) and I/Crgl (I) mice were investigated. In 2 sets of experiments, it was found that introduction of the C3H virus into C and I mice resulted in only occasional milk transmission of MTV by these mice in their 1st 3 lactations. In contrast, most C X I hybrid mice exposed to MTV could transmit the virus serially for at least 5 successive passages.
