A total of 339 representatives from 33 countries participated in the 4th Annual International Meeting of the Society for the Advancement of Contraception (SAC) held in Chicago in September 1986. The major theme of the conference was the unsatisfactory state of contraceptive availability in the US resulting from medical malpractice and product liability issues. A highly litigious legal climate has led to the virtual withdrawal of the IUD (except the Progestasert device) from the contraceptive options available to US women. However, the IUD still plays a useful role in family planning programs in other parts of the world where there is a lesser threat of spurious, costly legal battles. Several sessions focused on recent technical advances in contraceptive technology, including various tubal occlusive devices, contraceptive progestogens, and triphasic formulations. Also discussed were potential improvements in barrier methods with new spermicides and improved training in the application of methods requiring periodic abstinence. The next SAC meeting is scheduled for October 1987 in Caracas, Venezuela.
