In their review of pravastatin in the August 1992 issue of Clinical Pharmacy, Jungnickel et al. indicated that preliminary data suggest that pravastatin may produce fewer adverse effects than the other marketed 3-hydroxy-3methylglutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitors, lovastatin and simvastatin. The only reliable way to compare the adverse-effect profiles of similar drugs is to study them prospectively in large, doubleblind, randomized, controlled studies. Such studies have only recently begun to appear.
