Of 194 newborn Indian infants with serum bilirubin above 10 mg/100 ml, 76 had glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency of whom 11 required exchange transfusion. Jaundice appeared generally on the 2nd or 3rd day of life and serum bilirubin values were highest on the 4th or 5th day. Boys were more affected than girls.
