Antibody in Nigerian animals to African horse sickness serotype 9

After the death of a horse in 1970 from the disease, the immune status of horses, donkeys and dogs in Western Nigeria was assessed. Serum samples were tested undiluted and inactivated in qualitative neutralization tests against about 100 LD50 units of the virus by intracerebral inoculation into mice. A serum protective substance was found in half of the horses sampled in Ibadan and in a higher proportion of those from savannah areas in the North. Although the results may reflect heterologous protection from another African horse sickness serotype, it was thought unlikely that a serious outbreak of the disease would occur in Nigeria.
