The 2 strains of mice were a control line, C, randomly selected and a growth line, G, selected for rapid growth rate between 3 and 6 weeks old. The mice were fed to appetite until they were killed at 20 weeks old. Weights of liver, muscle and epididymal fat pads were greater for strain G than for strain C. Correction of liver and muscle weights for body size removed the strain difference in liver and muscle weights, but adipose tissue weight in the G strain was still greater than in the C strain. Activities of liver glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and aspartate aminotransferase were significantly greater in the C than in the G strain. Epididymal adipose tissue hexokinase and malic enzyme activities were greater in the C than in the G strain. Alanine aminotransferase activity in muscle tissue was lower in the G than in the C strain. Muscle hexokinase and aspartate aminotransferase activities were not significantly different in the 2 strains. Fatty acid synthesis from labelled glucose was higher in adipose cells from the C strain. Lipid synthesis in the liver of G and C strain mice was not significantly different. The increased lipid content of the G strain was probably the result of greater adipose cellularity.
