Legal abortion and early morbidity, its dependence on different factors

Early complications of pregnancy interruption were analyzed in 2 series of patients. 1078 abortions were performed during the 1st 6-month period, 1428 during the 2nd 6 months. The rates of early complications were 19.48% and 7.9% respectively. The significant reduction is due, in the author's view, to the use of safer techniques and improvement in equipment. Complications were found to be related to age of pregnancy (6.15% before the 12th week, 28.3% thereafter), parity, experience of the surgeon, and method of abortion. Nulliparous women are particularly at risk because the previously unopened cervix is especially susceptible to injury.
