Population genetic studies of serum transferrin variants in some populations of Hungarian spotted cattle

Data are tabulated on the frequencies of 14 transferrin phenotypes and of the alleles TfA, TfD1, TfD2, TfE and TfI(HUNGARY) in 18 816 Hungarian Spotted [Hungarian Pied] cattle. The results of 9166 matings among these cattle showed (a) significantly more homozygous offspring than expected from TfATfDXTfDTfD matings, whereas the reciprocal cross gave the expected 1:1 segregation ratio, and (b) significant deviations from expected segregation ratios in matings involving the other Tf alleles. The data support the idea that the Tf system in cattle is not a balanced polymorphism, and the authors suggest that the system is affected by immunological and/or physiological factors that are at present unknown.
