At the annual meeting of the Canadian Public Health Association in St. John's, Nfld., in 1974, it was resolved ".. that C.P.H.A. endorse the development of a Canadian Nutrition Policy (CNP) which would have as its objective the goal of guaranteeing to all Canadians the means of achieving nutritional health. It was however recognised that a major obstacle to the development of a CNP exists: that being lack of leadership of the nutrition movement in Canada. It was suggested that C.P.H.A. could show leadership by recommending to the Federal Minister of Health formation of a permanent, national, multidisciplinary Nutrition Council for the purpose of formulating a Canadian Nutrition Policy." Because some conditions, many beyond the control of health professionals, are necessary for that, it was pointed out that the food supply should be physically available, physiologically useful, economically affordable and personally desirable.
