Synthesis and antiviral activity of interferon, induced by arboviruses, in the cell cultures of chick embryo fibroblasts

The effect of interferon on virus reproduction and infectious viral RNA synthesis in the culture of chick fibroblasts was studied. The capacity of interferon to induce resistance to viral infection in cells was also studied. Arboviruses of group A were used, including Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis and Semliki forest virus. Preliminary treatment of the cells with interferon decreased the infectious capacity of the viruses, inhibiting their reproduction in the cells, and also inhibiting the synthesis of infectious viral RNA. Cells treated with interferon acquired resistance to subsequent viral infection.
