Infectious bursal disease virus in Japan had never shown cytopathic effects (CPE), but a strain transferred through hens' embryonated eggs and then propagated in primary chick embryonic fibroblasts showed CPE from the fourth successive passage. The same virus propagated only in primary chick or duck embryonic fibroblasts did not show CPE.
