Serological survey of the incidence of infectious bursal disease serotypes 1 and 2 in chicken and turkey flocks in England

Serum samples were collected from turkeys (between 42 and 110 days of age) in 32 flocks and from 46 broiler flocks at slaughter (about 7 weeks of age). Twenty serum samples were collected from each flock. Antibodies to infectious bursal disease virus serotype 1 only were present in 2 (4.3%) chicken flocks and no turkey flocks. Antibodies to serotype 2 only were present in 7 (15.2%) chicken flocks and 29 (90.6%) turkey flocks. Antibodies to both serotypes were present in 31 (67.4%) chicken flocks and none of the turkey flocks while 6 chicken and 3 turkey flocks lacked antibodies to either serotype. The range of serotype 1 mean antibody titres in chickens was between 26.7 and 215.2. The mean titres of serotype 2 antibodies were between 24.7 and 212.8 in chickens and 25.4 and 212.4 in turkeys. Titres of 24 or less were regarded as negative.
