Hormones or drugs were injected directly into the antrum of follicles in the case of rabbits or into the follicle wall in the case of domestic fowls. This technique enabled the contralateral ovary to serve as a control. Neither prolactin nor thyrotropin caused ovulation. Intrafollicular injection of either FSH or LH caused ovulation in rabbits 10-11 h after treatment. The min. ovulatory doses were 100 ng FSH or 10 ng LH; lower doses caused luteinisation rather than ovulation. The ability of FSH to induce ovulation was not due to LH contamination. FSH and LH act synergistically; when treatment includes both FSH and LH, the min. doses for ovulation in the rabbit are 75 and 5 ng resp. Data on the fowl support the conclusion that FSH and LH act synergistically.
