First blood samples taken when 323 cows were visited for parturient paresis were analysed. Only samples with Ca not more than 8 mg/100 ml serum were studied. Of the total cases 22% were before calving, 61% in the first day after calving, 14.5% in the second day and 3% in the next 4 days. The disorder was more common at the 5th, 6th and 7th calvings. Recurrence was 30% in cases before calving, 17% in those on the first day and 11% on the second day. Most cows, 37.5%, were recumbent and alert, 28% were recumbent and somnolent, 7% in lateral recumbency and 27% were standing, but there were more recurrences in lateral recumbent and somnolent cows. Serum Ca was significantly less, 4.3 mg, in somnolent and lateral cows than in the others, 4.9 mg. Serum P was least, 1.1 mg/100 ml, in somnolent recumbency. Serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase did not differ among types of case (from summary).
