The treatment of genital herpes with antiviral drugs has been the focus of much at tention in both the scientific community and the media. The demonstration of an association between genital herpesvirus infections and cervical cancer, and the risk of severe neonatal infections in infants born to infected mothers, have heightened the anxiety for an effective treatment modality. But it is premature at present to consider any of the available drugs effective in completely eradicating genital herpesvirus infections. This issue discusses clinical aspects of genital herpes, with emphasis on medical management.
