In 1941, 14,346 cases of syphilis and 3383 cases of gonorrhea were diagnosed in Puerto Rico. Kahn and Kline tests indicated a 10% infection with syphilis in the urban civilian population and 5% in the rural population. The presence of military camps on the island has greatly increased the problem of venereal diseases. The author recommends an extensive Health Education program involving surveys, radio and press cooperation, follow-up of all reported sources and contacts, health programs in the schools and legal control of prostitution.
