Chronic factitious disorder in an adolescent girl

A chaotic and inconsistent childhood, weak and conflict-charged egos, impoverished object relations, sado-masochistic and hypochondriacal preoccupations are all features of the context in which factitious disorders proliferate. This paper presents the case of a chronic factitious disorder in a female adolescent. A review of recent literature is included with particular attention to the complex psycho-social dynamics, special diagnostic issues and therapeutic guidelines to follow in the management of this potentially treatable group of disorders.
