Schistosome transmission was prevented in naturally infected (with Schistosoma mansoni) populations of Biomphalaria glabrata in a stream in Puerto Rico by introduction of the ampullarid snail Marisa cornuarietis, which serves as a decoy for the cercariae. Infection of the planorbids in this stream was interrupted for almost 3 years despite continuing transmission in a similar stream nearby. The cost of this biological control method was 1% of other available methods.
