Oestrous cycles in Ayrshire cows before and after insemination

Data collected in 1961-62 on 482 cows are tabulated. There was no significant difference in the incidence (90.5%) of normal cycle length (18-24 days) preceding 1st insemination between cows which conceived and those returning to service. For 93 cows not conceiving after 1st insemination, the incidence of normal cycle length was 89.4% before insemination v 52.7 after (P<0.05); the incidence of long cycles (>48 days) was 2.1 v 22.6%.
