Four strains of Musca domestica L. resistant to DDT were selected from a susceptible strain by treating the adults or larvae of successive generations with sublethal doses of the insecticide. The development of resistance was found to be accompanied by increases in the rate of tissue respiration. Tests showed that the factors responsible included increased specific respiratory activity of the mitochondria, selective stimulation of different dehydrogenases and an increase in the total mass of mitochondria.
