Preoperative preparation of the colon with an elemental diet

Nine patients about to undergo colonic operations were given a chemically defined elemental diet (Vivonex-100), 2500 ml (kcal)/24 h, with water and clear liquids to appetite; wet and dry weights of faeces were estimated and faecal bacteria were counted daily. There was a progressive reduction in dry weight of faeces but no changes in type or numbers of anerobic or aerobic bacteria during 7 days of study.
