Young male Wistar rats were freely fed with water and a control rat chow, a hydrolysed or elemental diet in which protein was present as amino acids, carbohydrates as disaccharides and lipid as medium-chain triglycerides, or a second control with the casein hydrolysate replaced by whole casein. After 8 days the rats were given 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) intraperitoneally and were killed 1 to 20 days later. The elemental diet maintained normal body growth and blood picture.
